Religon
The Aztec people worshiped many gods. When the Aztec's took over a new tribe or culture they often took up the new tribes gods into the Aztec religion. One of the most important aspects of Aztec religion was the sun the Aztec people called themselves "people of the sun".
Sacrifices
The Aztec people felt in order for the sun to rise each day they had to preform rituals and sacrifices to give the sun strength. Aztec sacrifices were an important aspect of religion. These Aztec rituals was that they believed that the gods needed to be provided with human beings and this was through human blood. As a part of the ritual the victim would be painted they would be placed on a slab where their heart would be removed and held up to the sun then they would chuck the body down stairs of the pyramid or temple. The body was disposed feeding the animals at the zoo the body or putting the head on show. The sacrificial victims were often chosen from captive warriors. Some estimates say that there was around 20,000 people scarified a year.
Gods
Three of their god were Huitzilopochtli, Tezcatlipoca and Tonatiuh. Huitzilopochtli was the patron of war and sacrifice. Tezcatlipoca often represented an evil power. Tezcatlipoca was the patron of the night. Then Tonatiuh he was the sun god, Tonatiuh was nourishing god who provided warmth in order to do so he needed sacrificial blood. Tonatiuh was also the patron of warriors.
tEMPLES
Aztec places of worship were known as Teocalli, god's houses. These temples were four sided with a flat top and were able to withstand earthquakes. They were used for many things including: human and animal scarifies, private blood letting, burning of copal and religious song and dance.
